The Countess of Wessex undertook a three day visit to Malta this week as Global Ambassador of the 100 Women in Finance (100WF) Next Generation Initiative. The Next Generation Initiative aims to encourage and support young women pursuing a career in the financial sector.

The Countess marked International Women’s Day on Thursday with a variety of engagements. HRH attended an event at the Stock Exchange in Valletta hosted by 100WF, ringing the bell to mark the start of trading with the President of Malta Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca. The Countess and the President then met staff on the trading floor and attended a reception for women in the financial industry.

Her Royal Highness went on to the Business Professional Women Careers Day for young women, where she met students exploring career options in, amongst other things, medicine, engineering and the media. HRH spoke to careers mentors about the support they are offering young women exploring different career opportunities. At the event The Countess was joined by the President for a question and answer session with female students. HRH talked about the importance of leaders using their voices and influence to create change, opportunities and discussion. The Countess told the audience to ‘be brave and gain as much knowledge as you can about the opportunities that exist.’

The Countess then attended a lunch in honour of International Women’s Day at the historic Palace of the Grand Master. Hosted by the President of Malta, invitees included female politicians and business leaders.

HRH went on to the University of Malta where she presented prizes to exceptional students in the department of banking and finance. The University is geared towards the infrastructural and industrial needs of the country, proving expertise in crucial fields. The Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy is one of the largest at the University, with a student population of 1,800.

In the evening The Countess attended a reception to raise awareness of 100 Women in Finance’s mission to empower women in the financial industry. Speaking at the event HRH said, “We know that young people need role models to inspire them to success. We need to encourage successful women to be visible to those yet to follow them.”

On the final day of The Countess’ visit, HRH attended a working breakfast with nine entrepreneurs from the Young Enterprise Malta programme and heard about their projects, ranging from a food testing app to a portable solar panel sunshade.
